Poinsietta Napkin Rings - How To

About three year ago I did a video demonstrating how to make these easy and festive napkin rings holders and I've had so many of my YouTube viewers ask me for the template. When I could no longer locate them I decided to do some googling myself! I found this wonderful tutorial on Bagladee's website with very easy and descriptive instructions and pictures. Have fun and the happiest of the holiday season! For template and intsructions click here!

Snow Day!

As a Democrat abroad I must say that I was very happy with the results of the Election yesterday. This morning however, we woke up to a huge surprise as Mother Nature decided to drop a huge snowfall and declare that  Winter has arrived a few weeks early! So what's a gal to do when
she's snowed in?...well she bakes and crafts and gets ready for our Annual Christmas Craft Sale!!! I made the most delicious Caramel Apple Mini Loaves today and they are yummo!!

We made slime today!!!

I found a great recipe on YouTube for making slime or Flubber and these guys not only helped in the process, they also played for hours and hours creating creepy, slimy things.
Fun, fun, fun times. Recipe below:
To make the slime:

Mix 1 teaspoon borax in 1 cup of water. Stir until the borax is dissolved.
In a separate container, mix 1/2 cup (4 oz) white glue with 1/2 cup water. Add food coloring, if desired.
While stirring, pour the borax solution into the glue solution.
The slime will become hard to stir after you mix the borax and glue solutions. Try to mix it up as much as you can, then remove it from the bowl and finish mixing it by hand. It's okay if there is some colored water remaining in the bowl.

The slime will start out as a highly flexible polymer. You can stretch it and watch it flow. As you work it more, the slime will become stiffer and more like putty. Then you can shape it and mold it, though it will lose its shape over time.
Don't eat your slime and don't leave it on surfaces that could be stained by the food coloring.

Store it in a plastic bag or covered container in the refrigerator.

A roxyfur inspired mini, cards and jewelry!..oh my!!!

Dehydrating Mint

I've always had a plentiful growth of mint in my back yard but to my surprise I found a patch of it growing under my Mountain Ash tree in the front yard. This was the perfect opportunity for me to try out my latest garage sale find,my new Snackmaster Dehydrator, which cost me a whopping $10! I washed the leaves really well , picked them off of the stems and then place them on the trays of the dehydrator.

It only took a couple of hours before I was brewing a delicious cup of organic mint tea. Normally in the summer I just use the fresh leaves, but it's nice to know that once Autumn arrives, I can harvest all of my mint to enjoy throughout the cold winter weather. Dehydrators are a good thing!

40th Anniversary - Picture Perfect!

Our 40th anniversary celebrations couldn't have gone better! The weather was heaven sent...absolutely perfect!
My little grandsons looked so handsome in their golf shirts and khaki shorts and I was so proud of them! The guests were greeted at the front door with a sign that directed them to follow the trail of rose petals to the back yard ceremony! There are many more pictures to come but I just wanted to let you all know how wonderful everything turned out! Color me happy!

40th Anniversary Party Prep Part 2!

Roses in full bloom!

My rose garden is absolutely gorgeous right now with its heady aroma hitting you in the face as soon as you step onto the deck. The bonus is that the roses are right behind the swing on the porch and I am so happy that we decided to transplant them all to one location. Our yard is really looking ready for our 40th anniversary celebrations and vow renewal this weekend. Let's just pray that Mother Nature cooperates!!

The Bleeding Heart Story

Our Bleeding Heart Bush
Pink Bunnies
Slippers

At this time of year, so many people want to know the story about the Bleeding Heart so this is how I told it to my children.(While telling the story slowly peel the pieces away from the flower.)
Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess and a handsome prince. The prince loved the princess and wanted to marry her. He asked, she said no. He figured if he gave her special gifts then he would win her heart. First he gave her some pink bunnies. She still said no. So he gave her some beautiful slippers; she still refused so he gave her some lovely dangly earrings.
The princess still refused so since the prince could not have the love of his life, he took his sword (that's the green bit - you have to use your imagination a little) and stabbed himself in the heart.
Hence the name the Bleeding Heart.

A "No Reason" Get-Together!

Don't you just love great get-togethers that are not really planned and are not for any special reason? They always turn out so perfectly. That's exactly how this evening unfolded. My sons and their families came by for supper and we ate outside a dinner of chili, salad and garlic bread.

My daughter in law brought some Sangria mix so of course we HAD to try and it was so delicious!
Papa made a fire and the grandsons enjoyed the campfire while my son serenaded us on the guitar.

Sitting by the campfire

Sangria
The evening was topped off with a Rhubarb and Strawberry pie with ice cream from Fife and Dikel and some Angel Food Cake with strawberries and whipped cream. I'm so full both with food and contentment.
Yummy desserts!

What's on my needles today?

I was sitting on my porch today and I made the cutest little booties that were super fast and easy. I was searching online to find a pattern that would go with the Bernat Craft yarn that I got on sale and I found a pattern for these sweet 'Chaussons Mignons'
Although the blog is in French the pattern is in English if you scroll down a bit!

Ahhh...bare feet!

I just love this pic that I snapped of my 2 year old grandson's feet that I captured at a family picnic birthday party on a sunny, Sunday afternoon. (Look at the piece of grass hanging off his t-shirt!)
His little tootsies have just enough grass stains and dirt on them to know that he had a great time running barefoot through the grass. Just so sweet how they are tucked under his little butt....be still my heart!!

Easy Peasy Hot Cross Buns!

We had an incredible snow day today just as everyone was getting used to the idea that Spring was peeking its head just right around the corner. We awoke to a full all in all Alberta blizzard, so I decided to use my time to make some homemade rolls(2 dozen) and some home made hot cross buns! I made them all with the following simple and fast bread recipe.
Two Hour Buns
3 cups water lukewarm
8 tbsp. sugar
6 tbsp. oil
1 tsp. salt
2 tbsp.Instant Yeast
2 eggs
Flour (7-8 cups - to make workable dough)

Mix yeast and 4 cups flour. In a separate bowl, whip eggs, sugar, oil and water. Blend well, add remaining flour and salt. Knead in last of flour. Let rise 15 minutes Punch down. Do not knead. Let rise again for 15 minutes Punch down and form into buns. Put buns in greased pan; cover and let rise in warm place for one hour. Bake in 350 F oven for 15 to 18 minutes Makes 4-5 dozen buns. For the hot cross buns I added the following to the last flour addition : 1 Tbl cinnamon, 1 tsp. nutmeg,1/2 tsp. cloves, 1/2 cup currents, 1/4 cup dried cranberries (or any dried fruit you'd like)I brushed the hot cross buns with an egg wash and snipped a 'cross' in the top of each bun with scissors. Once cooled I drew a frosting cross atop each roll with ready made frosting!

Junque Journal Entry - Kind, Smart, Important!

Meatless March and beyond....

I love learning new things and one thing I learned from my trip to Vegas was a even healthier lifestyle from my younger sister. With health issues I've always thought it important to eat as healthy as I can, hence my no sugar, high fiber diet, but after seeing my sister and her energy, I am going to give the Pescatarian lifestyle a try. Pescatarians are people who eat no meat, pretty much nothing that has hooves or feet, but will consume fish and dairy. I had given this diet some thought after watching the movie Food Inc. on Netflix and I've never been a red meat lover so I don't think this transition will be that difficult. So here's to a journey towards a healthier lifestyle!

Overdone!

Just returned home from a few days in Vegas and while I had a wonderful time,I really HAVE to learn how to pace myself. I am my own worst enemy. Living with a chronic disease like Lupus is often very frustrating especially when someone as stubborn as me,so when I am having a relatively good time, I tend to overdue. I had a really bad flare up on the day we were leaving to come home, but after a few days resting I am feeling back to my old self again!
